A former Greek national team player has died following a serious car accident
Former Greek national team soccer player Marios Ikonomou has died at the age of 33 following a serious motorcycle accident. Doctors fought to save his life for nine days, but were unable to save him.

Greek soccer has suffered a heavy loss. Marios Ikonomou, a former national team defender who played in Europe’s top leagues, has passed away.
The tragic incident occurred on May 23 in the Greek city of Ioannina. Ikonomou was involved in a serious motorcycle accident and suffered severe head injuries.
Doctors performed emergency surgery and placed the footballer in an induced coma. However, they were unable to save the former player’s life—he died in the hospital nine days after the accident.
Marios began his career in his homeland with a club in Ioannina, after which he moved to Italy. The defender played for Cagliari, Bologna, Sampdoria, and Bari. He also played for AEK and Copenhagen, with whom he won the Danish championship.
