The UPL has named the best player and coach of May
The Ukrainian Premier League has named the Player and Coach of the Month for May. The top division has honored the standout performers of the final weeks of spring as part of its traditional monthly awards.
This was reported on the UPL’s official website.
Kudrivka midfielder Andriy Storchous has been named Player of the Month for May. Over the course of the month, he played in five matches, scoring four goals. In particular, the midfielder recorded braces against Lviv’s Rukh (2-1) and Kyiv’s Dynamo (2-3).
Meanwhile, Arda Turan, head coach of Donetsk’s Shakhtar, was named Coach of the Month for May. The Miners secured four wins at the end of the season and suffered a loss to Kovalevsky’s Kolos (0:1). A strong performance in the spring allowed the Turkish coach’s team to reclaim the championship title.
The main contender for the “Kudrivka” leader was Kyiv Dynamo forward Matviy Ponomarenko. In the fan vote, the latter even finished ahead of Storchous. However, most experts cast their votes for the midfielder from the mid-table Premier League team.
Second in the experts’ vote was Vadym Sydun, a forward for Kamianets-Podilskyi’s “Epicenter.” Third was winger Gleyker Mendoza, who has already left Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih. Fans, meanwhile, placed Polissya Zhytomyr defender Eduard Sarapii in the top three alongside Ponomarenko and Storchous.
The Turkish specialist did not emerge as the favorite among either the experts or the fans. The experts’ favorite was Viktor Skrypnyk, head coach of Luhansk’s “Zorya,” while the fans preferred Ruslan Rotan of “Polissya.” This polarization allowed Turan to win.
He also finished ahead of Kudrivka head coach Oleksandr Protchenko. Under his leadership, the team significantly improved its results and narrowly avoided relegation playoffs. Both groups that participated in the voting placed the young coach in third place.
