The Ukrainian national team convincingly defeated Poland in their first match at the Malders

The Ukrainian national soccer team has made a triumphant start to a new chapter in its history under the leadership of its new head coach, Andrea Maldera. In their first match under the Italian coach, held in the Polish city of Wrocław, the “blue-and-yellows” secured a convincing victory over the local team. The friendly match between the neighboring countries ended with a 2-0 win for the Ukrainian team.

While preparing the team for the game, the new head coach made several bold personnel decisions. In particular, Maldini sent an absolute national team debutant onto the field from the opening minutes—defender Oleksandr Romanchuk, who recently won the Romanian championship title. In addition, the coach brought back experienced Kyiv Dynamo winger Andriy Yarmolenko to the national team, entrusting him with the captain’s armband. The position at the forefront of the attack was taken by Lyon forward Roman Yaremchuk, while Anatoliy Trubin took his place in goal.

The start of the match was dictated by the home team: Jan Urban’s players immediately seized the initiative and forced the Ukrainians to defend with all their might. However, the Ukrainian national team deliberately played second fiddle and waited for their chance on quick counterattacks. The first serious test for Polish goalkeeper Marcin Bulka came when the referee disallowed a goal by Viktor Tsygankov for offside. However, by the 34th minute, Maldera’s experimental tactical scheme—in which Tsygankov played as a second striker—had fully paid off. Viktor made an effective interception, stealing the ball from Jakub Piotrowski, and instantly set up Yaremchuk. The Lyon striker reacted in a flash and fired a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, sending the ball straight into the far corner of the net.

Even before the halftime whistle, the Ukrainians doubled their lead. At the end of the first half, the tireless Tsygankov recorded another assist, finding Andriy Yarmolenko with a pass. The captain coolly beat the goalkeeper, sending the second ball into the Poles’ net. This precise shot marked the Dynamo captain’s 47th career goal for the Ukrainian national team.

In the second half, the Polish national team coach attempted to radically change the game plan, making five substitutions at once and taking the team’s star player, Robert Lewandowski, out of the game. This yielded no results for the hosts—the Ukrainian defense, led by Trubin, performed reliably and kept a clean sheet. The final whistle sealed a comfortable 2-0 victory, giving Andrea Maldera a winning and promising debut at the helm of Ukraine’s national team.
