Record-holder James Milner has announced the end of his soccer career
Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder James Milner has retired from professional football. He is one of the all-time leaders in the English league and a three-time Premier League champion.
The former England national team midfielder spent 24 seasons at the senior level. In the 2025/26 season, he became the Premier League record-holder for most matches played. Milner is leaving professional soccer with 658 appearances under his belt.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, the time has come to end my playing career. Having made my debut for my childhood club, Leeds, at the age of 16 and becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, I could never have imagined what this journey would be like. From those first steps to the moment last year when I could no longer lift my leg properly, and then came back to help Brighton qualify for European competition for the second time in history at 40,” the veteran wrote.
In this campaign, Milner played 22 matches across all competitions. He recorded one goal and one assist. The experienced midfielder spent three years with the Seagulls.
