Finland has won the World Hockey Championship for the fifth time
The Finnish national team defeated the tournament hosts, Switzerland, 1–0 in golden overtime, claiming the world hockey championship title for the fourth time since 2019.
This was reported on the IIHF’s official website.
The decisive match kept fans on the edge of their seats for several hours straight.
The World Championship final between Switzerland and Finland showcased the extraordinary resilience of both teams’ defenses.
Throughout the three full periods of regulation time, neither team was able to score, resulting in a scoreless tie.
In terms of total shots on goal, the Finnish players held a slight edge. However, the goalies for both teams performed flawlessly, neutralizing all dangerous chances in front of their nets.

An interesting moment occurred in the first period when the home team managed to put the puck in the opponent’s net. However, after a detailed review of the video replay, the referees decided to disallow Anton Lundell’s goal.
The gold medal was decided in overtime, where it took the teams 11 minutes to determine the winner. Forward Konsta Helenius received the puck on the left wing, broke through to the net on his own, shifted his position, and beat the goalie.
This precise shot gave Finland its fifth championship title in history and its first from the 2022 home tournament.
For the Swiss national team, this match ended in yet another sporting tragedy on the international stage.
For the tournament hosts, this is their third consecutive loss in the final: in 2024, 2025, and 2026, the Swiss failed to score a single goal in the decisive match.
The loss to the Finns was their first in this championship, as Switzerland had won all nine of its matches leading up to the final of the 2026 World Cup.
It is worth noting that the rivals had already faced each other in the group stage of the current tournament.
At that time, Switzerland secured a confident 4-2 victory, scoring twice in the very final moments of the game. Overall, in head-to-head matchups at World Championships, the Swiss had a streak of three consecutive wins over the Finns.
However, in the most important game of the season, it was the Finnish hockey players who were able to show character and secure the victory.
