Ghanaian boxer Isaac Dogboe speaks about mental health challenges
In Ghana, former WBO super bantamweight world champion Isaac Dogboe spoke about mental health challenges in professional boxing and called for greater attention to athletes’ psychological well-being. He said this in an interview with MyJoyOnline.
Pressure after defeats
Dogboe noted that it was difficult for him to overcome mental and emotional challenges during difficult periods of his career. In particular, he suffered two consecutive defeats to Mexican fighter Emanuel Navarrete, after which he lost his world championship title.
According to the boxer, athletes in his sport are constantly expected to demonstrate strength. He explained that even when a person feels pain, they must get up and act as though everything is fine. Dogboe added that such experiences can be deeper than they appear.

Need for support
The boxer also stressed that athletes can find it difficult to find someone to talk to about such experiences. According to him, thoughts about previous fights and the next bout constantly occupy an athlete, and balancing this with family life is sometimes not easy.
In 2018, Dogboe defeated Mexican boxer Jessie Magdaleno and became the eighth world champion in Ghana’s history.
