Southampton players may file a lawsuit against the club over the scandal

Players for England’s Southampton are considering legal action against their own club following a spying scandal. The incident led to the English Football League (EFL) deciding to exclude the team from the Championship playoff final. The players are exploring legal options to protect their interests. This was reported by The Athletic on May 20.

At the same time, the EFL reinstated Middlesbrough in the tournament, which had previously lost to Southampton 1-2 in the Championship playoff semifinals for promotion to the Premier League.

An independent disciplinary committee also decided to deduct four points from Southampton in the 2026/27 Championship season. The club plans to appeal both decisions.

According to the publication, Tonda Eckert’s team was largely sidelined from the proceedings, and the players were informed only of the basic details. The players learned of the EFL’s decision at the same time as the public, which caused outrage within the team.

Particular dissatisfaction stems from the financial implications. After being relegated from the Premier League, the players’ salaries were cut by 40%, and they were to be restored in the event of a return to the top flight.

The players have already sought advice from the Professional Footballers’ Association.

In its statement, the EFL noted that the parties are working to resolve the appeal on Wednesday, May 20. Depending on the outcome, further changes to the match schedule are possible.

Earlier, the EFL filed an official charge after Southampton analyst William Salt allegedly observed Middlesbrough’s training session 48 hours before the first playoff semifinal match. The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw, and in the return leg at St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton won 2-1 thanks to a goal in stoppage time.

Among the evidence provided by Middlesbrough was a photograph of the alleged “spy”—Tonda Eckert, a member of the analytical team—who was hiding in the bushes and taking pictures of the opponent.
