Legendary British cyclist retired from the sport to pursue a career in medicine

Legendary British and Scottish cyclist Katie Archibald has officially retired from professional sports at the age of 32 to pursue a career in the medical field.

The two-time Olympic champion has decided to withdraw from the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will be hosted by Glasgow.

The decorated athlete has decided not to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer, despite having been named among the first three officially selected athletes for the Scottish national team in December, alongside Lauren Bell and Mark Stewart.

The main reason for this radical change in the track star’s life is a new professional interest.

The reason for this decision is that Archibald, in her own words, has fallen head over heels in love with her new profession. She is currently training to become a registered nurse.

Over 13 years of competing at the highest level, Katie Archibald has built an incredible legacy that allowed her to surpass another British track legend, Laura Kenny, in total medals at World and European Championships, although Kenny remains ahead in Olympic titles.

Having started track cycling relatively late, at just 19 years old, she won gold at the continental championships in her senior debut in 2013.

In total, she has amassed a fantastic 51 international-level medals: two Olympic golds and one silver, seven world championship titles, and a record 21 continental titles.

Archibald’s career was filled not only with spectacular triumphs, such as the emotional gold in the team pursuit at the 2023 World Championships in Glasgow, but also with difficult challenges.

Serious injuries consistently prevented the Scot from reaching her full potential at the peak of her form.

Injuries repeatedly forced her to withdraw from key events at the very last moment, notably ahead of the 2022 Birmingham Games and the 2024 Olympics.
