An Australian national team soccer player failed a cocaine test
Australian national team soccer player Christian Volpato has found himself at the center of a scandal after testing positive for cocaine. According to British media reports, the drug was detected after police stopped his car for the second time in a few hours in Sydney.
The 22-year-old midfielder plays for the Italian club Sassuolo and represented Australia at the 2026 World Cup this summer. The incident took place in Sydney. Initially, police pulled over Volpato’s car for speeding.
The soccer player underwent a breathalyzer test, which showed no violations. He was then released. However, about two hours later, law enforcement officers pulled the player over a second time for a similar traffic violation.
During the second check, according to the publication, cocaine was detected in his system. At this time, there is no official information regarding possible disciplinary action against the soccer player, nor have there been any comments from Volpato himself or Sassuolo. 22-year-old Christian Volpato is a member of the Australian national team, which competed this year in the FIFA World Cup held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
He played in three matches at the World Cup but did not score any goals. If the information about the positive test is officially confirmed, the player could face not only legal consequences but also disciplinary sanctions from soccer authorities or his club. An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is currently underway, according to The Sun.
