Jasper Philipsen won Stage 17 of the Tour de France; Pogacar retained the lead
Belgian cyclist Jasper Philipsen won the 17th stage of the 2026 Tour de France, which took place in the Alps, on July 22. In the final sprint of a reduced peloton, he beat Mauro Schmid and Olav Kooy, according to France 24.
Philipsen was led to the finish line by his teammate Mathieu van der Poel, a former world champion. The Belgian crossed the finish line several bike lengths ahead of his closest rivals.
This victory marked the 11th stage win at the Tour de France for the 28-year-old Philipsen. In 2023, he won the green jersey as the best rider in the points classification. For his stage victory, the Belgian earned 50 points and narrowed the gap to seven points behind Denmark’s Mads Pedersen, who leads the points classification.
General classification leader and defending champion Tadej Pogačar finished in the main peloton just under nine minutes after Philipsen and retained first place. Meanwhile, his UAE Emirates-XRG teammate Adam Yates, a key support rider for the team in the mountains, struggled throughout the stage after suffering from an upset stomach the previous evening.
