Xabi Alonso has taken charge of Chelsea in London
Spanish coach Xabi Alonso has officially been named the new head coach of London's Chelsea, signing a long-term contract with the English powerhouse.
The renowned Basque coach will take over on July 1, and his contract runs through the summer of 2030.
In the meantime, the current acting manager, Callum McFarlane, will see out the rest of the season at the helm of the Blues. This was reported by Glavkom, citing the club’s official website.
Prior to his appointment at the London club, the Spaniard had been without a formal job since mid-January. At that time, the management of Real Madrid dismissed Alonso just six months after his high-profile appointment.
Despite his setback in Madrid, demand for the coach remained high, and until recently, he was actively linked with another Premier League club—Liverpool.
Xabi Alonso began his professional coaching career immediately after retiring from playing, working with the youth teams at Real Madrid.
In the summer of 2019, he moved up to a new level and took charge of the reserve team at Real Sociedad in San Sebastián.
A real breakthrough for the young Basque came with an invitation to the German league, where he managed to achieve outstanding results.
In October 2022, the young specialist was recruited by Bayer Leverkusen. In his second season, Alonso led the “Pharmaceuticals” to the championship and won the German Cup.
The German powerhouse also lost the Europa League final but later won the German Super Cup, cementing the Spaniard’s status as one of Europe’s most promising coaches.
The new appointment comes amid a deep crisis at the London club, which is going through difficult times. The Blues’ management fired two head coaches during the season in an attempt to salvage their league position.
Enzo Maresca was dismissed on January 1, and Liam Rosenoir at the end of April.
