Svitolina won the WTA tournament in Rome for the third time

Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, claimed victory at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, defeating American Coco Gauff, who is ranked fourth in the world, in the final.

The intense match on the center court, Campo Centrale, lasted 2 hours and 48 minutes and ended with a score of 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2 in favor of the Ukrainian tennis player.

In the first set, the American took a break lead twice and was up 2-4, but Svitolina managed to seize the initiative, come back from 0-40 on her opponent’s serve, and take the set. The second set was a closely contested battle, with Goff coming out on top in the tiebreak. In the decisive set, the Ukrainian demonstrated excellent physical conditioning and, thanks to a series of well-placed winners, confidently overpowered her opponent, winning four consecutive games after the score was tied at 2-2.

The match statistics showed Svitolina with 2 aces, 2 double faults, and 6 converted break points. Goff had 1 ace, committed 7 double faults, and converted only 3 breaks out of 17 opportunities.

This triumph in the Italian capital marked the Odessa native’s third career title, following victories in 2017 and 2018. Overall, this marks the Ukrainian athlete’s milestone 20th WTA title and her fifth trophy at WTA 1000-level tournaments. Thanks to her success in Rome, Svitolina will rise to seventh place in the updated world rankings.
