Kostyuk played the entire U.S. Open with an injured wrist
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk played the entire U.S. Open with a sore wrist. Despite the injury, Ukraine’s No. 2 player reached the fourth round; she has now taken a break to recover and hopes to return to the court later this season.
After wrapping up her run at the US Open, Kostyuk said that the injury had begun to bother her as early as the tournament in Cincinnati. At first, the pain only occurred during certain volleys. However, the situation gradually worsened. By the time the Ukrainian arrived in New York, her wrist was already hurting with virtually every shot.
Despite this, Kostyuk decided to continue competing in one of the season’s major tournaments. As a result, she played through the entire US Open with severe pain in her hand. “I had an ultrasound, which generally confirmed what we had suspected. The problem is related to overuse. There are various treatment options, but we chose a more conservative approach,” the tennis player said. The athlete is now taking time to recover. According to her, the main goal is to give her arm enough rest so that it can heal completely.
The pain intensified during the match against Nosková
The most difficult moment for Kostyuk came during her fourth-round match against Czech tennis player Linda Nosková. Even before the match began, the Ukrainian realized that the problem with her wrist had become more serious. During the warm-up, the pain began to intensify rapidly. Kostyuk wasn’t even sure she’d be able to play the entire match normally. “On the day of the match against Linda Nosková, the situation started to deteriorate very quickly even during the warm-up, and I didn’t even know if my wrist would hold up for the entire match,” the athlete admitted.
The injury directly affected her play. Kostyuk simply couldn’t execute some of her shots the way she usually does, so she had to change her tactics right in the middle of the match. “Of course, it had a huge impact on my game. There were many shots I simply couldn’t execute because of the pain, so I had to change my plan and adapt as the match went on,” the tennis player explained. As a result, the Ukrainian player’s run at the tournament ended at this stage.
Kostyuk Advanced to the Fourth Round of the US Open
Despite her health issues, Kostyuk had a successful tournament. She reached the fourth round of the US Open. This result is also significant for the Ukrainian in terms of her WTA ranking. After the US Open, she is set to enter the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time in her career.
Kostyuk’s exact ranking will depend on the updated rankings following the tournament’s conclusion. Nevertheless, her future ranking will be the highest of her career. This is also a significant achievement for Ukrainian tennis. Kostyuk has been among the country’s top players for several seasons now, and she now has the chance to take another step forward in the world rankings.
When will Kostyuk return to the court?
At the moment, the tennis player has not specified an exact return date. She wants to give her wrist as much rest as possible first and avoid the risk of a new flare-up. Kostyuk is considering a return to competition as early as the 2026 season. However, she will resume playing only after her wrist has fully recovered. “Right now, I need to give my hand as much rest as possible and hope that I’ll be able to get it back to normal by the time the Asian series starts, because there are still a lot of tournaments ahead, and I don’t want to keep playing through the pain,” Kostyuk said.
Thus, for the Ukrainian player, recovery will be more important than the next tournament in the near future. After playing through pain at the US Open, she does not want to continue the season at the risk of aggravating the injury. If her wrist heals in time, Kostyuk may return to the court during the Asian series. However, the final decision will depend on her condition and the progress of her recovery. This was reported by BTU.
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk will enter the world’s top 10 for the first time in her career next week. She will be ranked 10th in the WTA rankings.
