Format of the Nations League

Starting with the 2028–29 season, the UEFA Nations League will consist of three leagues, and as a result, the promotion and relegation system will be adjusted for future editions.

The top eight teams in League A (two from each group) will, as before, compete for the tournament title. However, the system for moving between leagues will change: Previously, the four worst teams in League A—those finishing last in their groups—were relegated directly to the lower division, while the third-place teams competed for a spot in the top tier in a playoff against the second-place teams from League B.

In contrast, in the 2026–27 Nations League, only 2 of the 4 worst teams will be directly relegated from the tournament, while the top two of the four third-place finishers in League A will retain their spots in the top division.

The two worst third-place teams, along with the two best fourth-place teams from League A, will play in the playoffs against the second-place teams from League B. The first-place teams in League B will, as before, be promoted directly.

In League B, the teams that finish in third place will remain in the same division, while the teams that finish in last place will play in a playoff against the teams that finished in second place in League C. The winners of the third-tier league will earn the right to direct promotion to the higher division.

Teams that finish in 3rd and 4th place in League C will remain in the division. All teams from League D will move up to League C. Thus, the next edition of the Nations League will feature three divisions of 18 teams each.

In each league, the tournament participants will be divided into three groups of six teams each, and they will play a single round-robin tournament.
