Marta Kostyuk defeated Iga Swiatek and advanced to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open after defeating world No. 3 Iga Swiatek of Poland 7-5, 6-1 in the fourth round of the women’s singles competition. Ukraine’s No. 2 player extended her winning streak on clay courts to 16 consecutive matches.
This was reported by the WTA.
The first set of the match was a close contest, where, after the score was 3-3, the players exchanged two breaks, and at 6-5, the Ukrainian broke her opponent’s serve again and won the first set against Swiatek for the first time in their head-to-head history. The second set ended in a rout for the Polish player, as after an initial exchange of games, Kostyuk won five games in a row. Prior to this match, the head-to-head record was entirely in the Polish player’s favor at 4-0; she had previously won the French Open four times and had not dropped a single set to her opponents in the three previous matches of the current tournament in Paris.
This victory marked Kostyuk’s sixth career win over a top-five ranked opponent and her third this season. Marta Kostyuk became the second Ukrainian in history to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, following Elina Svitolina, who has competed at this stage five times. For Kostyuk, this will be her second Grand Slam quarterfinal after the 2024 Australian Open. The Ukrainian’s next opponent will be determined in the match between Elina Svitolina and Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic.
Earlier, Marta Kostyuk advanced to the round of 16 at Roland Garros.
Former Russian player Putintseva was eliminated from Roland Garros.
