Mbappé says he can win Ballon d'Or despite trophyless season

French footballer Kylian Mbappé said he considers himself worthy of the Ballon d'Or this year, although Real Madrid won no trophies during the season and France lost 0-2 to Spain in the World Cup semi-final.

He said this in an interview with France Football, as reported by Dawn. The 27-year-old forward named winning the individual award as one of his short-term goals.

The footballer's arguments

Mbappé noted that the absence of trophies at club or international level should not automatically deprive him of his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or, as it is an individual award. He also pointed out that the winner of the award is not chosen unanimously.

According to him, he scored 15 goals in the Champions League and 25 in La Liga during the season. After the World Cup, his number of goals at world championships reached 22. The article notes that this made Mbappé the highest-scoring footballer in the tournament's history.

The forward said he considers his performances in major club competitions and at the World Cup sufficient grounds for victory. He also called it special that he surpassed Lionel Messi's record for the number of goals at World Cups.

Zidane's assessment

Mbappé spoke positively about the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as France's head coach after Didier Deschamps. He called the 1998 world champion a legend of French football and the player who, in his opinion, most embodies the France national team.

According to Mbappé, Zidane left a notable mark on the history of French football and is among the footballers who have become iconic for several generations of fans.
