Mykolenko was named Man of the Match in the Premier League and matched Yarmolenko's achievement
Vitalii Mykolenko had one of his best games at the start of the season in the English Premier League. The Ukrainian defender helped Everton earn a draw against Tottenham and received individual praise from the fans.
The Premier League Matchday 4 game in London ended in a scoreless draw—0–0. Mykolenko started for Everton, played the full 90 minutes, and was solid in defense, preventing the hosts from capitalizing on their chances.
Following the match, the statistics websites WhoScored and SofaScore rated the Ukrainian’s performance at 7.7. However, the main honor came from the fan vote on the Premier League’s official website and app.
Mykolenko received the most votes and was named Player of the Match.
For Ukrainian soccer players, this achievement holds special significance. The Premier League introduced the official fan voting system for the Player of the Match ahead of the 2019–20 season, and since then, only two Ukrainians have managed to win this award.
Andriy Yarmolenko was the first to do so in September 2019. At the time, he was playing for West Ham and helped the team defeat Manchester United 2–0, scoring one of the goals.
Now Mykolenko has joined Yarmolenko, becoming only the second Ukrainian player abroad in the seven-year history of this award to be named the Premier League’s Man of the Match based on a fan vote.
