64 national teams could compete in the anniversary 2030 World Cup
Alejandro Domínguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), stated that 64 national teams could compete in the 2030 World Cup.
According to him, the organization is working to expand the tournament to mark the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup. Domínguez noted that increasing the number of participants will allow more countries to take part in the world’s premier soccer event.
“We are working to ensure that 64 national teams participate in the 2030 World Cup in honor of the 100th anniversary of the World Cup. Soccer at the international level thrives when it opens up to the world,” the CONMEBOL president wrote on social media platform X.
He also emphasized that expanding the World Cup to 48 teams has already had a positive effect, as it has provided more opportunities for national teams from different regions.
“May the World Cup become the greatest celebration soccer has ever seen,” added Domínguez.
