Nepali boxer Chandra Bahadur loses opening bout at Asian Games — Kathmandu Post

In Nagoya, Japan, Nepali boxer Chandra Bahadur Thapa Magar lost to India’s Jadumani Singh Mandengbam in the preliminary round of the men’s up to 55 kg category at the Asian Games. The bout at Nishio Gymnasium ended in a unanimous 5:0 decision in favor of the Indian representative.

According to Kathmandu Post, all five judges awarded the victory to Mandengbam. The scores were 30:27, 29:28, 29:28, 30:27 and 30:27. The fight lasted three rounds of three minutes each. In the third round, Magar was credited with a knockdown after falling following a push by his opponent.

Nepal’s third defeat

Thapa Magar became the third Nepali boxer unable to advance past the tournament’s preliminary round. On the same day, Ramisha Shrestha lost to Vietnamese boxer Thi Tham Nguyen in the up to 51 kg category, also by a unanimous 0:5 decision. A day earlier, Dan Bahadur Darlami lost to Iraq’s Ali Qasim Hamdan Al-Sarray in the up to 70 kg category, also by unanimous decision.

Last year, Magar won a bronze medal at the IBA Men’s World Championships. After that, the International Boxing Association ranked him third in the world in the elite men’s 51–54 kg weight category. He was Nepal’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Nagoya.

Other national team bouts

Seven Nepali boxers are competing, three of whom have already ended their campaigns. Hagendra Roka Magar was due to fight Macau representative Elvin John Reyes Salinas in the up to 60 kg category. Kusum Tamang was due to face Chinese boxer Shu Li in the up to 65 kg category, while Rabin Nepal was due to meet Thailand’s Jakkaphong Yomkhot in the up to 90 kg category. Asmita Duwal is also competing in the women’s up to 54 kg category.
