Sri Lanka beat England to level ODI series — Dawn

Sri Lanka’s cricket team defeated England by 16 runs in the second match of the ODI series at Headingley Stadium in Leeds, United Kingdom. As a result, the team levelled the score in the three-match contest. As Dawn reports, Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis scored 121 runs, while Dunith Wellalage took three wickets.

Mendis’s century

Sri Lanka, who won the toss, finished their innings at 321-6. Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis, who scored 54 runs, put on a 137-run partnership for the second wicket. Kusal Mendis recorded his seventh ODI century, reaching 100 runs off 82 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes.

On 17 runs, Kusal Mendis was given a chance to continue his innings after Gus Atkinson failed to catch the ball at fine leg. Later, the Sri Lanka captain was dismissed from a shot caught by leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed.

Turning point in the chase

England made a confident start to their chase of a target of 322 runs: Tom Banton scored 73 runs, Ben Duckett made 67, and their first-wicket partnership totalled 143 runs. Wellalage took the wickets of both opening batters, as well as England captain Harry Brook, who scored one run. The left-arm spinner finished the match with figures of 3-49.

Jos Buttler scored 64 runs but left the field due to discomfort in his left hamstring when England needed 68 runs off 75 balls. He later returned to the game and finished the innings with 69 runs. England needed 19 runs before the final over, but the team failed to catch up with their opponents.

The decisive match of the series will take place on Sunday at The Oval in London.
