Nigeria win WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup — Premium Times Nigeria

Nigeria’s women’s under-17 football team, known as the Flamingos, defeated Togo 4-0 in the final of the WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire. The team won all five matches of the tournament, scored 17 goals and conceded two, Premium Times Nigeria reports.

Captain Harmony Chidi converted two penalties in the first half. In the second half, Oluebube Umejiaku scored in the 67th minute, while Oluwakemi Adegbuyi set the final score in the 90th minute.

On their way to the final, the Nigerian team defeated the Republic of Niger 5-0, Ghana 4-2, Burkina Faso 2-0 and tournament hosts Côte d’Ivoire 2-0.

Preparation for the World Cup

Emmanuel Ikpeme, acting general secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, congratulated the players and team officials on the victory. According to him, the tournament organized by WAFU-B was an important stage of preparation for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, which is due to begin next month.

The Flamingos won bronze medals at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. After the competition concludes, the team is expected to return to Nigeria on Tuesday.
