Ahead of Usyk's fight, Lapin found himself at the center of a media scandal
Ukrainian boxer Daniel Lapin found himself at the center of a scandal ahead of his fight in Egypt due to a post he made on the social media platform Threads. The post in question drew a negative reaction from some fans and sparked a wave of criticism against him on the eve of the boxing event in Giza, where the undercard for the main fight featuring Oleksandr Usyk was taking place.
Daniel Lapin, who is fighting his next bout as part of Oleksandr Usyk’s major event, decided to build anticipation among his audience on the social media platform Threads. The boxer posted the official event announcement, noting the start time of the broadcast. However, instead of the correct English spelling “Kyiv,” the athlete used “Kiev”—the imperial spelling of Ukraine’s capital that Russia has been imposing and promoting for decades.

The reaction from Ukrainian fans to the post was immediate and uncompromising. Dozens of outraged users criticized Lapin for his lack of patriotic awareness, emphasizing that Ukraine’s representatives on the international stage must be worthy ambassadors for the country.
As a reminder, Lapin lost by knockout in Egypt ahead of Usyk’s fight.
