Ukrainian volleyball players lost their warm-up matches ahead of the Nations League

The Ukrainian men’s and women’s national volleyball teams played exhibition matches ahead of the start of the Nations League and both suffered defeats. The teams tested their form and lineups against strong opponents as they prepared for the official matches of the season. Despite the results, the coaching staffs continue to search for the optimal lineups ahead of the start of the tournaments.

The Ukrainian men’s national volleyball team played a friendly match in Poland against the hosts and lost 1-3, in a match where the Ukrainians started confidently, winning the first set 25-22, but later lost momentum and allowed their opponents to seize the initiative, with the Poles taking the next three sets—23-25, 23-25, 21-25. Ilya Kovalyov was the top scorer for the “blue-and-yellows,” scoring 15 points, while the team played without several key players, including Oleg Plotnytskyi, Yuriy Semenyuk, and Vasyl Tupchii.

The Ukrainian women’s national team also played a friendly match and lost to the Netherlands 1–3; In the match against opponents considered among the strongest in Europe, the Ukrainian women managed to take one set 25-20, but ultimately lost the other sets 21-25, 19-25, 22-25, demonstrating a fighting spirit but a lack of consistency over the long haul.

Both teams continue their preparations for the official start of the season and will have new friendly matches in the near future: the men’s team will play against Serbia, and the women’s team against Germany. After that, the Ukrainian men’s and women’s volleyball teams will enter the final stretch of their preparations for the Nations League, where the men will face Japan on June 10, while the women’s team will begin their campaign with a match against the United States—the reigning Olympic medalists.
