Mercedes driver George Russell set the fastest time in the second practice session of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at Italy's Monza. His lap of 1 minute 22.559 seconds was 0.120 seconds faster than Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, who finished second.

Results of the second practice session

Russell's Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli set the third-fastest time, 0.141 seconds behind the leader. Antonelli is set to start from the back of the grid due to engine-related penalties. Reigning world champion Lando Norris of McLaren was fourth, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari was fifth, and McLaren's Oscar Piastri was sixth.

Leclerc set the fastest time in the first practice session — 1 minute 23.008 seconds. He was 0.173 seconds ahead of Hamilton. “There is still work to do, as our rivals look strong, but so far the car feels good,” Leclerc said.

Russell needs to win Sunday's race to cut the 59-point gap to the championship leader and his teammate Antonelli. Norris, who won the previous two races, said McLaren's current pace does not meet the required level. ABC News Australia reports on the session results.

FIA decision on the Monaco Grand Prix

The FIA International Court of Appeal issued a decision after successful appeals by McLaren and Red Bull over the results of the Monaco Grand Prix on June 7. Alpine driver Pierre Gasly, who finished third, was moved back to seventh after two five-second speeding penalties were reinstated. Isack Hadjar returned to third position, while Piastri moved up to fourth.
