Real Madrid did not renew its captain's contract

Real Madrid defender and captain Dani Carvajal will officially leave the club this summer when his current contract, which expires on June 30, comes to an end. The management of the Spanish powerhouse has decided not to offer the 34-year-old academy product a new contract, so his final appearance in front of the home crowd at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will take place on May 23 in a match against Athletic Bilbao.

The experienced right-back has been with the Madrid club since the age of ten and, over the course of his professional career, has won thirty prestigious trophies with the "Whites," including six Champions League titles and four La Liga championships. However, in the current season, the defender has played twenty-two matches across all competitions without scoring, and the team itself has posted disappointing results, losing the race for La Liga gold prematurely and being eliminated from European and domestic cup competitions.

Madrid’s poor domestic performances under the leadership of Álvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso—which led to a significant gap behind Barcelona in the league standings and defeats in the decisive stages of other competitions—prompted the club to make personnel changes. The end of Carvajal’s era in Madrid coincides with Real Madrid’s preparations for a major squad overhaul ahead of the start of the next soccer season, during which the coaching staff will focus on revamping the defense.
