Robert Moreno becomes interim coach of South Korea national team

Former Spain national team head coach Robert Moreno has been appointed interim head coach of the South Korea men's national football team. The decision was approved by the Korea Football Association on September 1 at a board meeting at Korea Football Park in Cheonan.

Contract until the end of November

The 48-year-old Moreno will lead the national team in its next six international matches. His contract will run until November 27. The Korea Football Association allows for the possibility that the specialist could be appointed permanent head coach for the AFC Asian Cup depending on the team's results in the autumn.

The national team's coaching position had remained vacant since late June, when Hong Myung-bo resigned after the team's elimination in the World Cup group stage. The association decided to appoint an interim coach rather than rush the selection of a permanent candidate ahead of the matches in September and October, Korea Herald reports.

Match schedule

South Korea will host Ecuador on September 24, Uruguay on September 28, Venezuela on October 2, and Uzbekistan on October 6. The association is also trying to arrange two more matches during the FIFA international window, which will run from November 9 to 17. In January, the team will compete at the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

In 2019, Moreno managed Spain for nine matches while Luis Enrique was on leave. He later coached French club Monaco, Spanish club Granada, and Russian club Sochi. Earlier, Moreno worked as a scout for Barcelona and was Luis Enrique's assistant at Roma, Celta, and Barcelona.
