The Glazer family may sell Manchester United — Bloomberg

The Glazer family is considering options for a partial or full sale of its shares in Manchester United after more than 20 years of ownership. Media reports indicate that discussions are ongoing within the family regarding a potential exit from the asset or its partial sale.

According to the agency’s sources, several members of the Glazer family are considering selling either a portion or all of their shares in the club.

Discussions about a potential sale are taking place against the backdrop of the club’s owners having to spend billions of pounds on the renovation of the legendary Old Trafford stadium in the coming years.

On the other hand, the club’s qualification for the Champions League at the end of this season opens up new opportunities for profit, which is an incentive to maintain the investment.

"The Glazer family as a whole has not yet made a decision to exit, and various family members are still discussing the best possible options," writes Bloomberg. According to the agency, some family members are still opposed to the sale, so reaching a deal could be difficult unless they change their minds.

A Manchester United spokesperson declined to comment to Bloomberg. The Glazers also did not respond to a request for comment.

"Any potential sale could attract buyers, particularly from the Middle East, as well as wealthy investors from the U.S. Buyers will likely have to pay a premium for such a prestigious sports asset," Bloomberg suggests.

The club’s shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange at around $21, corresponding to a market capitalization of $3.6 billion. But the value of a potential deal could significantly exceed this estimate due to the specific nature of the Glazers’ voting rights, the agency adds.

Avram and Joel Glazer are co-chairs of the club. Their siblings—Kevin, Brian, Darcy, and Edward—serve on the board of directors.
