Veronika Zhilina, an 18-year-old figure skater who previously represented Russia, has received official permission from the International Skating Union (ISU) to change her sporting nationality. From now on, the silver medalist at the Russian Junior Championships will compete in international tournaments under the flag of Azerbaijan.
A special document called a Clearance Certificate was issued to the Russian skater. It is granted when one of two conditions is met: residence in the new country or possession of citizenship.
In May, it was reported that Zhilina had received permission from the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) to compete for Azerbaijan.
The figure skater, who trains at the academy of two-time Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko, missed two seasons due to health issues.
