Putin's friend's son is set to become head coach of Moscow Dynamo

UA NEWS 16 April 2026 15:56
Putin's friend's son is set to become head coach of Moscow Dynamo

Roman Rotenberg, the son of a close friend of Vladimir Putin, is 99% certain to take the helm of the Moscow hockey club Dynamo.

His official appointment will take place on April 20 during a meeting of the club’s board of directors.

Alexei Kovalyov may become the new head’s assistant, although this point is still under discussion.

Roman Rotenberg’s appointment comes amid his recent failure with St. Petersburg’s SKA, which is funded by Gazprom. He worked with that team from 2022 to 2025 but was unable to fulfill their championship ambitions.

Currently, Rotenberg serves as head coach of the “Russia 25” national team and is first vice president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation.

His move to Dynamo is no coincidence, as he joined the Moscow club’s board of directors last July.

The owners of HC Dynamo are VTB Bank and Arkady Rotenberg’s Foundation for the Support of National Sports, Culture, and Education.

The latter is Roman’s maternal uncle, which underscores the family-run nature of the management of Russian hockey’s key assets.
