Sooryavanshi remained on the bench in India’s matches against Afghanistan — The National
In India, 15-year-old batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not play in the first two T20 matches of the series against Afghanistan, although he was named player of the series against Zimbabwe in July. India won both encounters by seven wickets and secured the series victory early, The National reports.
India’s victories in Delhi
Afghanistan played their home matches against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. In the two games, the Afghan team batted first and scored 156 runs for eight wickets and 159 runs for eight wickets, respectively.
India successfully chased the targets in the 14th and 15th overs. Left-handed Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson opened the batting in both matches. Sharma scored 82 runs in the first game, while Samson registered a quick 57 runs in the second.

Samson, 31, was named player of the series when India defended their home T20 world champion title earlier this year. He subsequently lost his place in the lineup after several unsuccessful matches during tours of Ireland and England.
Competition for a place in the lineup
After the second match, Samson said that Sooryavanshi should have made the team after his successful performance in the Indian Premier League, where, according to him, he scored 700–800 runs. Samson also noted that he himself failed to perform well in two or three matches in Ireland and England, while Sooryavanshi was in good form.
For the matches against Afghanistan, India returned to the more experienced opening pair of Sharma and Samson. The National notes that Samson is considered the better option in Asian conditions because of his scoring record and reliable wicketkeeping. The publication also considers Sooryavanshi’s appearance in the third match of the series, scheduled to take place on Thursday in Delhi, likely.
