Svitolina announced her withdrawal from the tournament in Cincinnati

On August 18, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina withdrew from the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati due to an injury she sustained during the tournament in Toronto. She was scheduled to face China’s Wang Xu in the round of 16.

In a statement from the Ukrainian tennis player, published by the tournament organizers, she cited the need for proper recovery from the injury she sustained during the previous tournament in Toronto.

“Unfortunately, I need more time to recover, because the injury I sustained in Toronto flared up during my second-round match. I wasn’t able to recover properly in time for my next match. I was planning to play here, as I have fond memories of my performances at this tournament. And I had a great match the day before yesterday. It’s very sad to have to leave this tournament at this stage,” Svitolina said.

It should be noted that during her second-round match against Tereza Valenová, Svitolina took a medical timeout to consult with a doctor.

This was reported on the tournament’s Instagram account.

As a reminder, Elina Svitolina got off to a dramatic start at the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. The Ukrainian lost the first set, saved seven match points in the second, and then completely outplayed her opponent in the decisive set.

On August 11, Elina Svitolina defeated Russia’s Katerina Aleksandrova in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Toronto and advanced to the semifinals. The Ukrainian lost the first set but staged a comeback to win the match in three sets—3–6, 6–0, 6–3.
