Svitolina was eliminated from Wimbledon in the first round
Ukrainian tennis player Daria Snigur pulled off a sensational upset by defeating Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, in the first round of Wimbledon. The match lasted just over an hour and ended in two sets. For Svitolina, the tournament ended right at the start, while Snigur continues her fight to advance to the third round.
A Ukrainian derby took place at Wimbledon, ending with an unexpected result. Daria Snigur secured a convincing victory over Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, and advanced to the second round of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament.
The match lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes. Snigur, currently ranked 77th in the world, defeated the world’s eighth-ranked player in two sets—7–5, 6–2. The first set was a closely contested battle. Both players held their serves confidently, but at the end of the set, Daria was able to capitalize on her opportunity and clinched the victory, 7–5.
In the second set, Snigur was already in complete control of the match. She played with confidence, forced her opponent into errors, and quickly built a comfortable lead. The set ultimately ended with a score of 6–2. Thus, Elina Svitolina’s run at Wimbledon came to an end after just her first match. For one of Ukraine’s top favorites, this was an unexpected result.
This was Svitolina’s third match against Ukrainian players in 2026. Earlier, she defeated Dayana Yastremska at the tournament in Doha but lost to Marta Kostyuk at Roland Garros. For Daria Snigur, this victory marked yet another successful performance at a Grand Slam tournament. This was the Ukrainian’s sixth appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam, and she advanced past the first round for the third time in her career. In the second round of Wimbledon, Snigur will face the winner of the match between Slovenian Veronika Erjanc and Frenchwoman Léa Jeanjean.
The Wimbledon tournament will run through July 12, and Daria Snigur will continue her quest for the best result of her career at one of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournaments.
Svitolina also secured a confident victory over an American opponent and advanced to the round of 16 at Indian Wells.
