Aduku says England underestimated Nigeria after 0–3 defeat — Premium Times Nigeria

Moses Aduku, coach of Nigeria’s women’s U20 national team, said that England underestimated his players in the round of 16 match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. Nigeria defeated England 3–0 at the stadium in Bielsko-Biała and advanced to the tournament’s quarter-finals.

Goals and penalty

Nigeria opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Tosin Rafiu scored the first goal. England had an opportunity to equalise in the 33rd minute, when a penalty was awarded after a VAR review. Rachel Maltby took the spot kick, but goalkeeper Christianah Uzoma saved it.

After the break, Janet Akekoromowei doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 47th minute. In the 61st minute, Aduku brought Mary Mamudu on for Ramatolahi Karim, and Mamudu scored the third goal in the 73rd minute. According to Premium Times Nigeria, Akekoromowei was named player of the match.

Next opponent

After the match, Aduku described the England team as strong, but said he believed it had not expected such a level of play from Nigeria. The coach stressed that his players should celebrate the victory briefly and focus on the next match.

In the quarter-finals, Nigeria will play Colombia, which defeated tournament hosts Poland 1–0 in the round of 16. The match is scheduled for Sunday at Władysław Król Municipal Stadium in Łódź.
