Ghana's coach resigned after the team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup

Ghana’s national team head coach, Carlos Queiroz, stepped down after the team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup. The African nation’s national team was left without an experienced coach immediately following its disappointing performance at the World Cup.

The seasoned coach had been in the position for only three months. The “Black Stars” had appointed the Portuguese coach to lead the national team, replacing Otto Addo. The local coach had failed to prepare the team adequately for the 2026 World Cup.

“Soccer, like life, teaches us one eternal lesson: either you win, or you learn. I leave this journey proud of what we’ve achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who have always strived for more. Reaching the highest level should never be the ultimate goal—it’s the beginning of even greater ambitions,” Queiroz wrote.

The “Black Stars” kicked off the group stage with a 1–0 victory over Panama. Midfielder Irenk’i scored the lone goal. Then, Keirush’s team secured a sensational draw against England (0–0). And in the final match, Ghana lost to Croatia (1–2) on a goal by defender Lukassen.

The Ghanaian national team advanced to the playoffs as one of the third-place finishers. In the Round of 16, the Africans lost to Colombia (0–1). This run by the “Black Stars” was their best since the 2010 World Cup, when the national team reached the quarterfinals of the tournament.

What is Carlos Queiroz known for?

He was born in Mozambique during the colonial era and moved to Lisbon in 1975 after a brief playing career. In the Portuguese capital, he began his coaching career.

He initially worked with youth teams at the modest clubs “Oliveirense” and “Belenenses,” and served as an assistant head coach at “Estoril.” From 1984 to 1991, he coached various Portuguese junior and youth national teams. He won the U-20 World Cup twice and the U-16 European Championship once.

In 1991, he took the helm of the Portuguese national team for the first time. He later worked at the club level with Sporting Lisbon, the New York Metros Stars in the U.S., Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan, and Real Madrid. For many years, he served as Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United in England.

He has also worked extensively with national teams (the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Iran (twice), Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman). From 2008 to 2010, he served as Portugal’s head coach for a second time. He achieved his greatest success with the Egyptian national team, which he led to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. With Sporting, he won the Portuguese Cup and Super Cup, and with Real Madrid, he won the Spanish Super Cup.
