Tottenham could have equalised, but Mamardashvili saved Omar Marmoush's shot, while Savio missed the target from the edge of the penalty area. In stoppage time, Szoboszlai controlled the ball with his chest and scored Liverpool's third goal with a powerful strike from around 25 yards.
For Tottenham, the defeat was their third in six matches in all competitions since the start of the season. The team's only victory came over Charlton in the previous round of the English League Cup.
