UEFA Escalates Conflict with FIFA Over Decision Ahead of the World Cup

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has sharply criticized FIFA following its decision to suspend the ban on U.S. national team forward Folarin Balogun for the 2026 World Cup.

According to reports, this decision has caused serious discontent in Europe, where it is linked to political influence and interference from the White House. As a result, UEFA is reportedly preparing tough measures against FIFA’s leadership and its president, Gianni Infantino.

The Balogun Case and Trump’s Influence

The scandal erupted after a Round of 16 match at the 2026 World Cup, in which the U.S. national team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–0. U.S. forward Folarin Balogun received a straight red card for a rough foul against defender Tarik Muharemović. According to the rules, the player was automatically suspended from the Round of 16 match against Belgium, scheduled for July 7 in Seattle.

However, FIFA took an unprecedented step by replacing the forward’s automatic suspension with a one-year “probationary period,” allowing him to participate in the upcoming playoff match.

According to insiders, this was preceded by a direct appeal from the White House and Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, asking him to reconsider the player’s suspension. Although FIFA itself denies any influence from the U.S. administration, Trump has already publicly thanked FIFA for this decision, sparking a wave of outrage among the Belgian national team.

UEFA’s Strong Reaction

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) called the decision “unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustified.”

“A minimum automatic one-match suspension following a red card is a principle enshrined in the regulations that cannot be subject to exceptions. During the 2026 World Cup, several other players found themselves in a similar situation and regularly served their suspensions. When compliance with the rules is no longer guaranteed by those who are supposed to uphold them, the integrity of the game is at risk,” reads the official UEFA statement.

Soccer stars also strongly condemned the situation. Former England captain Wayne Rooney called the decision “an absolute disgrace.”

And former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said: “Soccer is our game, not theirs. These two people (Infantino and Trump—ed.), who know nothing about soccer, should have no say in such matters.”

Even former FIFA President Sepp Blatter criticized his successor for kowtowing to the White House.

MEPs are calling for an investigation into the FIFA president over the bonus paid to Trump.

U.S. President Donald Trump may become one of the key figures at the 2026 World Cup final, and FIFA is reportedly ready to deviate from its long-standing ceremonial protocol. This could allow for an exceptional format for the politician’s participation in official match events.
