Ukraine and Poland may submit a joint bid to host the World Cup
Ukraine and Poland are discussing the possibility of a joint bid to host the World Cup. According to Minister of Youth and Sports Matviy Bidny, the discussion centers on a tournament in the 2040s, but the idea is currently only at the discussion stage.
Ukraine’s Minister of Youth and Sports Matviy Bidnyy made this statement in an interview with Politico.
“The next available date for the World Cup is sometime in the 2040s. We need to start planning for that now,” the minister said.
According to Bidnyi, Ukraine is interested in hosting major international sporting events and must take this possibility into account in its long-term plans for the country’s reconstruction.
“We will work on this… We continue to be a country focused on the greatest sporting achievements. This is part of our national culture, and we want to develop it despite all these difficulties,” he noted.
At the same time, the minister emphasized that a specific bid must originate from the sports community or the relevant federation.
After the interview was published, the Ministry of Youth and Sports clarified that Ukraine is not currently conducting any official negotiations or consultations with Poland regarding a joint bid for the World Championship.
The ministry also emphasized that Ukraine’s top priorities remain victory in the war and the safety of its citizens. The idea of hosting the World Cup is a long-term vision, not a concrete operational plan.
The upcoming World Cups already have hosts: the 2030 tournament will be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, while the 2034 World Cup will take place in Saudi Arabia.
