Olyanovska of Ukraine broke a world record that had stood for 36 years

Ukrainian track and field athlete Lyudmila Olyanovska set a new world record in race walking at the Continental Tour event in Eisenstadt, Austria. The previous record had stood for 36 years.

The 33-year-old from Kyiv competed in the one-mile race (about 1.6 km). Oliyanovska finished first with a time of 6:10.09 minutes, setting an all-time record in this discipline.

The Ukrainian race walker managed to beat the previous world record by a full 6 seconds. Prior to this, the world’s best time belonged to Lithuanian athlete Sada Eidikite (6:16.72 minutes), who set it back in 1990 in Kaunas while representing the USSR.

For Lyudmyla Olyanovska, this is not her first historic achievement in 2026.

In February, at the Ukrainian Championships, she also set a world record in the indoor 5,000-meter race, completing the distance in 19:53 minutes. Thus, the Ukrainian athlete is currently the holder of two world records.

This was reported by the National Athletics Federation.
