In Argentina, matches will be paused in the 10th minute in honor of Messi

The Argentine Football Association has decided to hold a large-scale tribute to Lionel Messi following his announcement that he is retiring from the national team.

In the upcoming round of matches, all games organized by the association—men’s and women’s, in soccer, futsal, and beach soccer—will be paused in the 10th minute of the first half. For one minute, players, referees, and fans will applaud in honor of the legendary number 10.

Stadiums with multimedia screens will also show a video highlighting the best moments of Messi’s career.

The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward is retiring from the Argentine national team with a record 207 matches, 125 goals, and 68 assists. As a member of the national team, he won the 2022 World Cup, the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, and the 2008 Olympics.

As a reminder, the US Open kicked off in New York with a record prize pool.

On August 31, Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, confidently defeated Argentina’s Solana Sierra in the first round of the US Open. The Ukrainian advanced to the second round of the tournament after defeating the world’s 91st-ranked player.
