In Spain, Piastri says wins will help prepare for 2027 title fight
In Spain, Australian McLaren driver Oscar Piastri said he aims to secure at least one Formula 1 victory this season in order to better prepare for a championship title fight in 2027. He described his chances of winning the individual title this season as very difficult.
According to Cyprus Mail, after 13 rounds Piastri had not yet won and trailed championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes by 151 points. At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, he finished fifth and noted progress in working with the car.
Season goals
Piastri said he would like to win one or two races this year, while his main goal remains fighting for championship titles. If he is unable to win the title this season, the driver intends to prepare as well as possible for next year.

The Australian's best result in the first season of the new era of regulations and power units was second place in Japan in March, where he finished behind Antonelli. His teammate Lando Norris has already secured two victories this season. Piastri also failed to start races twice, including at his home round in Melbourne.
Team positions
The driver believes McLaren will find it difficult to catch Mercedes in the Constructors' Championship, but the team has realistic chances of overtaking Ferrari. Ferrari are in second place and lead McLaren by 59 points, while Mercedes have another 122 points more than Ferrari.
Piastri denied that his current results had been affected by a psychological effect from last season. In 2025, after the Italian Grand Prix, he led Norris by 31 points and had seven wins after 16 races, but finished the championship third — behind Norris and Max Verstappen. The driver explained the current difficulties by the technical characteristics of the car, power unit and tyres, which require a different driving style.
