The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of introducing new tariffs on semiconductors and a broader range of technology products, including laptops, servers for data centers and gaming equipment. This is reported by CNBC, citing Politico.
Which goods could be covered by the tariffs
According to Politico, eight people familiar with the matter told the outlet about the possible measures. The potential tariffs could cover an expanded list of technology goods manufactured together with chips.

The White House did not respond to CNBC's request for comment. However, in a comment to Politico, it said that bringing semiconductor production back to the United States is one of Trump's top priorities and that his policies have already secured hundreds of billions of dollars in investment in the sector.

Previous tariffs
Tariffs on Chinese semiconductors had already been introduced under the administration of US President Joe Biden. Last year, Trump said he intended to unveil new tariffs on semiconductors and chips, but those measures were not implemented at the time.
Trump also said that tariffs on semiconductors and chips could amount to about 100%, but companies manufacturing products in the United States would not pay such a levy. In January, the Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on certain chips for artificial intelligence systems.
The tariff issue is being considered amid competition among technology giants to outpace China in building artificial intelligence infrastructure. CNBC also notes that Chinese companies reportedly may have been able to access Nvidia chips despite strict US export restrictions. According to industry observers, access to advanced computing capacity through overseas cloud providers contributes to the development of Chinese AI models.
