YouTube lets eligible US creators tag Amazon products and earn commissions

YouTube has allowed eligible creators in the United States to tag Amazon products in short- and long-form videos, as well as during livestreams. Creators will be able to earn commissions on sales of products tagged in their content, TechCrunch reports.

Integration with Amazon’s catalog

The new feature integrates Amazon into the YouTube Shopping affiliate program. Previously, creators could place Amazon Associates links in video descriptions and hope viewers would follow them to make purchases. Products can now be recommended through a built-in integration on the platform.

Amazon will provide YouTube with a selected catalog of in-demand and popular products that creators can tag in their content. If a required product is not in the catalog, a creator can contact YouTube support to request that it be added.

Automatic tagging and commissions

The feature also supports automatic product tagging. When it is enabled, YouTube’s systems can review a creator’s recently uploaded videos, identify suitable Amazon products, and add tags.

YouTube Studio will show creators their total daily earnings without a breakdown by individual products or videos. If a buyer returns a product, the corresponding commission will be deducted from the creator’s balance.

For now, only eligible creators in the United States can tag Amazon products, but the tags themselves will be available for viewing worldwide. YouTube may match a tagged product with an offer from a verified local seller so that the creator receives a commission for eligible international purchases. If no local offer is available, the viewer will be directed to Amazon’s US website; a commission will be credited if the purchase is completed on the US site.

To access the feature, a creator must be enrolled in the YouTube Partner and Shopping Affiliate programs, have an active Amazon Influencer or Associates account, and link it to their YouTube channel.
