Anthropic unveils standard for AI agents working with physical devices

Anthropic has unveiled a preliminary research version of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a standard designed for AI-based agents to work with physical devices in scientific research and advanced manufacturing. Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Reuters.

Laboratory and manufacturing equipment

According to Anthropic, MHS enables AI agents to work simultaneously with laboratory and manufacturing tools, including microscopes and robotic manipulators. The standard is intended for complex tasks, ranging from routine drug discovery experiments to calibrating a laser on a quantum computer.

Compatibility and safety testing

Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, said that integrating agentic AI with laboratory and manufacturing equipment could help researchers and engineers carry out autonomous workflows around the clock with minimal human intervention and speed them up.

The company says that MHS works on any device with a programmable interface and enables devices and AI agents to interact over networks. Anthropic is providing an early version of the standard to partners to develop safety evaluations before making MHS open source.
