Apple is developing an updated version of Siri with AI to compete with ChatGPT

Apple is working on a major update to Siri, the voice assistant for the iPhone. The company is developing a standalone Siri app designed to compete with chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. In addition, new AI features are planned to be integrated into iOS 27, expanding the system’s capabilities.

Ahead of the June WWDC conference, Bloomberg published images of the upcoming changes based on information from sources.

In the new version of iOS, users will still be able to summon Siri with a button. However, the assistant’s animations and responses will now be displayed via Dynamic Island—a black oval area at the top of the screen where live notifications and interactive app elements currently appear. This mode is primarily designed for quick voice queries and search.

Apple is also preparing a new way to interact with Siri via search. The swipe-down gesture, which currently opens Spotlight Search, will remain, but search queries will be handled by an updated Siri powered by artificial intelligence. According to Bloomberg, it will be based on a redesigned model utilizing Google’s Gemini technology.

Through this interface, users will be able to search for information, launch apps, send messages, check the weather, create calendar events, view notes, and run quick commands. Results will be displayed as cards, which will also appear via Dynamic Island.

As Bloomberg notes, Apple’s approach to AI development resembles its collaboration with Google, which made Google Search the default on the iPhone. The company considers developing its own AI solutions too expensive and complex a task, so it is currently using partner technologies while simultaneously developing its own models. Among them is on-device AI, which runs directly on the device rather than through cloud servers.

In addition, Apple plans to release a standalone Siri app. It will save chat history and allow users to upload documents and photos to work with the AI.

According to Bloomberg, ChatGPT currently has 900 million active users per week. At the same time, Apple’s total device base stands at 2.5 billion, giving the company significant opportunities to expand AI services among its users.
