Cognition's CEO denied reports of negotiations regarding the sale of the startup to SpaceX

Scott Wu, CEO of the AI startup Cognition, denied reports that Elon Musk’s SpaceX had attempted to acquire the company. In a post on X, he called the information inaccurate, stating that Cognition is not for sale and that there had been no negotiations between the two companies.

Earlier, Bloomberg, citing informed sources, reported that SpaceX had allegedly attempted to acquire Cognition as part of its efforts to develop its own artificial intelligence division. According to TechCrunch, Bloomberg also claimed that negotiations regarding the deal are no longer underway, though the companies continue to discuss potential collaboration.

In particular, Cognition could potentially use SpaceX’s computing power, which the company sells to other players in the AI market, including Anthropic. Wu did not comment specifically on this Bloomberg report.

The report came a few days after SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor, a startup working on AI programming tools. According to TechCrunch, the deal was valued at $60 billion. Earlier this year, SpaceX also acquired xAI, Musk’s AI company.

Cognition is developing the programming agent Devin and remains one of the largest independent startups in the field of AI software development. TechCrunch lists Mercedes-Benz, Citi, and Goldman Sachs among its corporate clients. In late May, the company raised $1 billion at a post-money valuation of $25 billion. Bloomberg reported that Cognition had begun preliminary talks on a new funding round at a valuation of $40 billion.

Last year, Cognition acquired the remaining assets of its competitor Windsurf after Google DeepMind hired the startup’s CEO and key researchers as part of a $2.4 billion deal for talent and licensing rights. Following that, Cognition laid off 30 employees and offered the remaining 200 Windsurf employees severance packages in exchange for resigning.
