Framework has updated its 12-inch laptop with new Intel chips and Linux

Framework has unveiled the second generation of its 12-inch convertible laptop, the Framework Laptop 12. The model features Intel Core Series 3 processors, additional hardware options, and a pre-installed configuration with Linux Fedora 44 KDE Plasma, according to The Verge.

The base pre-built configuration of the laptop starts at $699—$100 less than the starting price of the previous version when it launched last year. Pre-orders are now open, and the first shipments are scheduled for October.

The most affordable pre-built version is available only in green. It is equipped with an Intel Core 3 304 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB storage drive, and comes with Fedora 44 KDE Plasma preinstalled. According to Framework, nearly 80% of Laptop 12 owners are already using Linux in various distributions. The configuration with Windows 11 Home will cost $100 more.

The laptop also supports DDR5 memory with speeds up to 6400 MT/s, Wi-Fi 7 R2, and Thunderbolt 4 for the two rear Expansion Card slots. This allows you to connect two 4K displays at 60 Hz or external graphics processors. Other updates include a fingerprint scanner and a backlit keyboard.

Framework stated that the Core Series 3 chips are designed for compact, energy-efficient, and affordable laptops. According to the company, these chips are expected to improve battery life, thermal performance, and fan noise levels compared to configurations with more powerful chips.
