iFixit has preliminarily rated the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8's repairability at 4 out of 10
iFixit has preliminarily rated the repairability of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 foldable smartphone at 4 out of 10. While disassembling the device, experts noted the hinge design and its IP48 rating, according to The Verge.
The IP48 rating means the smartphone offers no protection against particles smaller than 1 mm. As a result, fine dust or sand can get into the hinge mechanism, which is difficult to repair or replace. iFixit reported that after opening and closing the Fold 8 several times, the hinge began to make crunching and grinding noises, and the smartphone stopped opening properly.

Samsung previously treated the hinge and the inner display as a single replacement unit. According to iFixit’s assessment, damage to either of these components may require nearly complete disassembly of the phone to replace the entire unit.
The issue of lint from pockets and other small particles getting inside has already affected Samsung’s foldable smartphones. Meanwhile, some new models from competitors, including the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and Honor Magic V6, have an IP6X rating, which provides complete protection against dust. The Verge notes that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 costs $1,900.
