Kakao Games will release the MMORPG *Realm of Dokkaebi* in October

South Korean company Kakao Games has unveiled the MMORPG *Realm of Dokkaebi*, which is scheduled to officially launch in October. The game is inspired by the dokkaebi, a mythical creature from Korean folklore. The project was presented at Korea House in downtown Seoul, and pre-registration for the game began that same day, according to the Korea Herald.

Realm of Dokkaebi is positioned as a 2.5D multiplayer role-playing game. Its visual style combines 2D pixel-art characters with 3D backgrounds. The developers also incorporated elements of traditional Korean aesthetics to highlight the game’s fantasy world.

Kakao Games Co-CEO Lee Si-woo stated that the new project aims to preserve the core features of an MMORPG while offering a modern approach. According to him, the combination of Korean themes and an original visual environment could make the game an intellectual property that appeals to both local and international audiences.

Among the announced mechanics is a skill deck system that allows players to combine 12 skill styles regardless of character type. The game will also feature optional player-versus-player (PvP) combat: users will decide for themselves whether to participate in PvP battles.

Kakao Games plans to eventually expand the availability of Realm of Dokkaebi to international markets. The company also announced that a built-in AI-powered assistant will provide players with information based on data about their in-game activity.

In the second quarter of this year, Kakao Games reported an operating loss of 23 billion won, or about $17 million. This marked the company’s seventh consecutive quarter of losses.
