Chinese researchers have developed a new species of freshwater fish called Zhongke No 6, a boneless variant of the gibel carp (Carassius gibelio), with almost no small intermuscular bones that usually make eating fish difficult. This was achieved by removing the runx2b gene responsible for the formation of these fine bones, while maintaining the fish's normal skeleton and growth.

Additionally, Zhongke No 6 shows improved disease resistance, which could increase survival rates and reduce farming costs. The research was conducted under the Precision Design and Creation program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, using CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology.

This breakthrough opens new prospects for aquaculture, as boneless fish are more appealing to consumers and may transform fish farming practices in the future.
