Ireland tests internet login via passport to protect minors

Ireland has launched a pilot project for digital identification and a digital wallet with age verification to access social networks. This initiative responds to concerns about the impact of social media on minors’ mental health, as highlighted by Finance Minister Simon Harris.

The digital wallet will store electronic documents such as birth certificates and driving licenses. This project aims to provide safer and more controlled online access for young users.

At the same time, the European Central Bank plans to introduce a digital euro, which will integrate with digital identification systems. According to the plan, all EU countries must implement such systems by the end of 2026, considering national specifics.

Ireland thus becomes one of the first countries to adopt an innovative approach to digital identification, helping to protect children online and accelerate digital transformation.

This project may serve as a model for other European and global countries, as online safety for minors remains a critical contemporary issue.
